Simon Combes 'Wildebeest Migration'
Simon Combes 'Wildebeest Migration'
One of our missions here at The Greenwich Workshop is to share our awe of this world with you. In over 50 releases since 1980, Simon has brought to us the marvel and wonder that is The African Experience; we have circumnavigated the planet with him in search of The Great Cats and gone on safari across North America. There is something magic to having been raised in the mix of wildlife, wilderness and man that is Kenya. I believe it has added a genuineness to his canvases that few artists can touch.
"Wildebeest Migration" is this month's 30th Anniversary Publisher's Choice because it is such a wonderful example of this. The migration of the wildebeest is only the most obvious aspect of the complex ecosystem that is the Serengetti Plains. Hunters at the top of the food chain such as these lions are as in tune the arrival of the massive herds as are the grasses upon which these ungulates feed. Simon's innate sense of how all of this comes together results in a grand depiction of the intimate balance of life.

Simon Combes 'Family Ties'
Simon Combes 'Family Ties'
Family is not a concept exclusive to human-beings. Elephant society is extraordinarily close-knit as well. A calf will stay with its mother until near maturity and will actively assist in the upbringing of other offspring within the herd. This scene is set in Kenya's Samburu Game Reserve, where a small calf, not yet a year old, snuggles up to its aunt while the calf's mother looks on with a benevolent eye.

James Christensen 'Sleeper Lost In Dreams'
James Christensen 'Sleeper Lost In Dreams'
"We are, each of us, angels with only one wing.
And we can only fly embracing each other."
- Luciano De Crescenzo
In dreams, it is said that wings represent a release of creative forces, that they give us the ability to understand and transcend the human condition. In religion, wings appear on angels, fairies, spirits and demons. In mythology, winged creatures are often messengers of the gods; they are a symbol of freedom and spirituality and a character having one wing is said to be lost in dreams. This latest release from James C. Christensen has the power to both provoke and inspire.

John Buxton 'Daughters Touch'
John Buxton 'Daughters Touch'
From historical artist John Buxton comes a suite of two paintings that focus on family life in colonial times; a daughter's pride in her father and a father's passing of wisdom to his sons.
The officer who appears in both images is in the 60th Royal Americans during the French and Indian War period. The group was made up of Europeans who came to the colonies circa 1755.
In A Daughter's Touch, a girl helps straighten her father's uniform as to make sure he looks his best. In Fatherly Advice, the same officer advises a pair of sons.
John Buxton is known for his historical art and for the painstaking research he puts into recreating specific scenes and battles. What is interesting about this pair of paintings is that the specific stories are left to the viewer's imagination. Is the officer in A Daughter's Touch preparing for battle, or is this a festive occasion? Are the two young men in Fatherly Advice learning strategies of war, or is he possibly sharing a life lesson?

Judy Larson 'One With'
Judy Larson 'One With'
Iyuptala: Ee-yoo-P'TAH-lah. "The Native American's relationship with the elements, the earth and its inhabitants were viewed as "one with." He moved through nature as he did with his animals, not as an owner or as a subduer, but as an equal, a companion, a brother. Total trust existed between the Native American and his horse, with whom he was "one with." They moved together as one. They understood each other. They listened to each other. So powerful was this understanding, this respect, that the very rocks in One With speak of this relationship. Nature, the animal, and the Native American are as one unit. There is no question. The Native American and his horse belonged here, "one with" each other, with their Creator, and with His creation"
These are the words of artist Judy Larson whose eloquence is clearly not limited to her art. Judy's passion has earned her the standing as one of America's leading artists. Her technique, the painstakingly detailed process of scratchboard, lends itself wonderfully to her art.

Simon Combes 'The Biggest Leopard'
Simon Combes 'The Biggest Leopard'
"Driving along a bush trail early one morning just a few miles from my home in Kenya, I heard a terrific roaring and screaming," Simon says. "Less than 100 yards away a huge commotion was taking place-two leopards were engaged in serious combat with dust, fur and chunks of dirt flying everywhere. After a few seconds, they broke off the fight to snarl and growl at each other, their ears flattened and tails lashing. Minutes later, the vanquished rose cautiously to his feet and slowly left the scene of battle. The victor was huge-by far the largest leopard I have ever seen. I have tried to capture that moment and expression when he paused to give me a baleful, malevolent glare."

James C Christensen 'Two Men In Conversation Attempting To Put Things'
James C Christensen 'Two Men In Conversation Attempting To Put Things'
This piece," James tells us, "was influenced by Gothic painting and manuscript illumination, but the departure point is, of course, a pun on the word 'perspective.' For centuries, old men in villages have sat around tables and philosophized, trying to put life into perspective. Here are two fellows-looming large because they're the main subjects of the image as well as the centre of their own conversation-discussing the community around them, the different strata of society being represented by a nobleman, scholar, beggar and so on. Once rumour and innuendo are nicely digested, this duo may chew on larger issues." Giclée canvas. Accompanied by a brass title plate. Stretched size: 19"w x 17"h, published from the artist's original acrylic and gold leaf painting. 475 signed by the artist and consecutively numbered.

Simon Combes 'Staying Close'
Simon Combes 'Staying Close'
"Early one morning in the Nakuru National Park near our home in Kenya, I spotted this female Rothschilde's giraffe with her calf looking very alert and concerned," said Simon. "The backlit animals were frozen in tension, which was a sure sign that a predator was nearby. Nothing was visible through my binoculars, but the unmistakable sound of a lion's roar came echoing from the forest. The big cat may have been out of sight, but the deep resonance of its roar was sufficient to make the young giraffe stay very close to its mother."

Judy Larson 'The Resisters'
Judy Larson 'The Resisters'
In 1919, the United States Department of Interior ordered the Crow Indians to kill all wild horses on their reservation land, sacred ground that had been leased by the government to cattlemen. No Crow could abide by this order, a demand akin to asking a man to kill his own brother. In 1923, following a final ultimatum, the United States government hired local cowboys, joined later by Texas outfitters, to kill the horses on a bounty basis-four dollars for the tip of a horse's ear. During the next seven years, the hired guns killed more than 40,000 horses, including the Crow's personal mounts.
By 1930, the great and powerful Crow tribe was bereft of its horses, its culture severely damaged. To the Crow, whose livelihood depended on their prized horses, this tragic event was more devastating than a military defeat.
The Resisters is the third offering in Judy Larson's "On the Run" series, a selection of images focusing on animals caught in dire circumstances.

William Phillips 'A Christmas Eve Delivery'
William Phillips 'A Christmas Eve Delivery'
Christmas Eve Delivery is the third in William S. Phillips' "Inns of Christmas Series," having previously delighted his scores of loyal collectors with Christmas Eve at the Winchester Inn and Winter Visitors at the Kringle Hill Inn (right, both Sold Out at Publisher). This year, Phillips captures the spirit of the season with a heart-warming Christmas Eve tale.
"An unusual Christmas Eve snowstorm has descended upon North Carolina bringing holiday travel to a near standstill," Phillips explains. "Highways and airports are closed, forcing travelers to find shelter as the roads are cleared. For the fortunate family who has checked into the Fuquay Mineral Spring Inn and Garden, it will prove to be a most wonderful Christmas experience. The Inn's gracious owners, John and Patty Byrne, knowing their guests disappointment at not spending Christmas Eve with loved ones, have sent for a Christmas tree with all the trimmings to be delivered to their room. A young boy with his faithful friend has volunteered to provide the delivery service in his wagon. After an elegant Christmas Eve dinner and some eggnog and spiced cider with cookies by the fire, our stranded travelers will return to a room decorated with the cheerful glow of a very special Christmas Eve tree."

James Christensen 'When Faeries Talk To Fishes'
James Christensen 'When Faeries Talk To Fishes'
A Hand-Tinted Original Stone Lithograph
From the Magic Fish Studio, the home of James Christensen comes this sophisticated yet whimsical piece of fine art. It sprang to life as an unfinished verse in the artist's sketchbook:
"When Faeries talk with Fishes, both express their wishes - When Fishes talk to Faeries, the conversation varies..."
Soon a drawing appeared above the unfinished lines of the poem.
The magic of the initial muse carried over into the decision to create the work as an original stone lithograph. It is a stone lithograph because James actually drew the image on a 300 lb. limestone. This is all the more impressive considering the image is created in reverse onto the stone. The image is transferred from the stone onto a sheet of fine watercolor paper by hand on a lithographic press. The final stone lithograph is considered original because this image does not exist as we see it until the lithograph is produced.
Hand-tinting original stone lithographs predate color printing. That the color work on each is added by hand enhances the concept of each being an original; no two are exactly alike. Further, we are able to offer the lithograph tinted with either amber or pastel hues.

Simon Combes 'Aftermath'
Simon Combes 'Aftermath'
"Three years ago, visiting Nakuru National Park near my home in Kenya," recalls Simon Combes. "I found a lion and lioness were having a passionate affair, when, suddenly, there was a mighty roar from an impatient call of a suitor-in-waiting only yards away. The result was Afterglow (a Greenwich Workshop release last year). Returning to the park earlier this year, I found the same pride with the big black-maned lion and his harem. The lioness from Afterglow was patiently enduring the boisterous attentions of two cubs. Again, a compelling subject to paint and an even more compelling title: Aftermath."

James Christensen 'Ten Lepers'
James Christensen 'Ten Lepers'
"And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole."
Luke 17:15-19
As he did with The Widow's Mite, James Christensen interprets one of the Bible's more powerful stories and presents us with an image of elegance, grace and beauty. At the same time he engages us in one of the higher promises of art: provoking thought. In fact, the art of reflection is at the core of the painting's message. The Ten Lepers were a group of men cured of their disease through one of Christ's miracles. Their tattered wrappings suggest what was, until this moment, their illness. Of the ten, nine are too preoccupied celebrating their new lease on life to think of anything else, much yet thank him. The tenth, at this moment, grasps truly what has occurred. He is the only one that returns to acknowledge the Master. This image provides an inspiring reminder to take a moment from our fast-paced world and reflect on what we have to be thankful for. And, just as importantly, to take the time to show this gratitude.

Bonnie Marris 'Spirit Unbroken'
Bonnie Marris 'Spirit Unbroken'
Spirit Unbroken is not only the title of Bonnie Marris' latest release, but also defines the artist's passion for her subject. "Believe it or not, I actually know this horse!" Bonnie says. "I've created this painting to be symbolic in many ways. Unleashing yourself and all your power; feeling the sheer thrill of pure freedom; giving it your all and outrunning adversity, defiance or discouragement is what everyone strives for. This has become an American theme today." Combining this unbroken spirit with her mastery of the elements of color, composition, light and emotion in aligned perfection, results in pure wildlife pleasure. With Spirit Unbroken, Bonnie has created an image no horse lover should be without.

Simon Combes 'Absolute Alaska'
Simon Combes 'Absolute Alaska'
"Painting the bears of Alaska offered me a new challenge-if I could get there," says Simon. "Finally, my name was pulled in a lottery which allowed me to visit the McNeil River sanctuary to observe bears fishing on sockeye salmon. I spent five incredible days there and probably saw seventy different brown bears. They were all around us; some as close as five feet. Absolute Alaska is a sort of composite image of my observations at both the McNeil and the smaller Mikvik rivers in the sanctuary."

William Phillips 'Wintering Over'
One of the Phillips Bay collection of limited edition prints and canvases.

Slip on your coziest pair of boots and mittens, and stroll on down to Phillips Bay! As Bill tells us, "This is a time of warm family gatherings around the fire, an extra quilt tossed upon the bed, a slice of home-baked pie savored before retiring. The sailing vessels and pleasure boats have been put up for the season, while the anchored lobster boats have found safe harbor. A flock of Canada geese winters over here, and since I can't resist adding aircraft to a landscape, they're joined by a Grumman Goose." Published from the artist's original oil painting. P.S. If you're eager to know what's on the northern and southern shores of Phillips Bay, you're not alone! Judy Larson 'Elusive'
Judy Larson 'Elusive'
"If one is a wolf, the best way to survive is to be elusive," says Larson. "The art of survival can depend upon how skilful one is at eluding capture, as well as how subtle one is in one's daily activities, making it difficult to be detected. Unfortunately, and despite its wariness of people, the wolf will use natural habitats like forested areas and other settings that are in close proximity to humans. Often travelling in the open along roads, railroads and utility corridors, the wolf will also feed and rest where there is good visibility. Further complicating its survival, the wolf most commonly lives in a pack, where more than one wolf may be seen at a time. And, in the case of states that allow the wolf to be listed as "trophy game" or as a "predator," or that encourage and support aerial wolf-shooting, even the wolf that lives far from human populations can be in imminent danger. Nevertheless, despite a shrinking habitat and, in some areas, threats to its very existence, the wolf continues to survive and to flourish."
Passionately ecological, Judy Larson's unique artistic signature is her meticulous scratchboard technique and "art of concealment." Scratchboard demands exacting skill, producing work with explicit detail and providing the opportunity to conceal one image within another.

Bonnie Marris 'Frogs for Breakfast'
Bonnie Marris 'Frogs for Breakfast'
There is nothing as beautiful - or as much fun - as watching as a red fox. When I see them playing, courting and hunting down on Honey Creek, it's like finding a little jewel in the forest. With this painting, I've captured a moment when the morning sun dances on the creek, sparkles through the leaves and bathes the fox in a warm glow. (Oh, and, yes, on such a perfect day, the frog gets away.)
