John Weiss 'Three's Company'
John Weiss 'Three's Company'
John says: "I wanted to represent a range of expressions with this tiny trio. I've always thought yawning was one of the cutest things that puppies do, so I tried to capture a mid yawn from this played-out little pup." John has given us an adorable group of Labrador puppies on his way to completing puppy paintings of the three most popular Lab variations.

John Weiss 'True Companions'
John Weiss 'True Companions'
John is known nationally as the foremost portrait artist of the canine species. His intimate observation of the animal has evolved into an insight into our relationships with them and even ourselves. And, in the case of this particular painting, himself. True Companions is an homage to his Labrador retriever, Maggie. Though John does not paint himself into his own work, we are observing a common occurrence in his own backyard. While the two seem to be basking in the warmth and amber glow of the evening's fire, is it possible that something else deflects the night's chill? In the company of his steadfast companion, a moment that could be considered full of loneliness becomes one of magic. Published from the artist's original oil painting.

John Weiss 'Retrievers'
Labradors take to the water better'n a duck. And how they love to retrieve! But you have to wonder what's going on between this pair of sweet, rambunctious Labs. Are they helping each other out or vying for the honor to bring the coveted trophy ashore? Artist John Weiss isn't telling...

John Weiss 'Our Favourite Place'
John Weiss 'Our Favourite Place'
Every home has it - a warm, congenial spot that beckons as evening falls. John found this perfect interior setting in a restored 19th-century farmhouse nestled among the rolling hills of Ohio. The hat and jacket, he says, belong to Grady, his elderly neighbor featured in an informal series of portraits; two of which, Old Friends and Forever Friends can be seen below have sold out at publisher. "You'll notice though," John says, "that Grady's cane isn't here; perhaps he's off preparing the evening meal for the two." Published from the artist's original oil painting.

John Weiss 'Making Memories'
John Weiss 'Making Memories'
"One of the real thrills of my year was the chance to take my dad fishing," John said when asked about the inspiration for his latest piece. "My father and I went down to Portage Lakes at Dusty's Marina, where I keep my boat, and I got him an old-fashioning fishing cane pole. We hadn't been fishing in years, and the sight of him fishing on the dock was an inspiration. We are so blessed to spend time with loved ones, and it was a real joy to spend this time with him. For the record, he caught more fish than I did."

John Weiss 'The Mascot'
John Weiss 'The Mascot'
During the Civil War, dogs served as troop mascots, demonstrating bravery and loyalty in camp and on the battlefield. These mascots were an inspiration, bringing about unity while representing beloved pets at home. For soldiers, the act of nurturing offset boredom in camp, and the dogs would enjoy a charmed life lavished with affection. In Weiss' powerful image, this mascot provides much needed sanctuary to a young soldier who has undoubtedly witnessed the many horrors of war.

John Weiss 'The Greatest Generation'
John Weiss 'The Greatest Generation'
New storms bring back memories of old ones. Country, duty, and a life free from fear came at a cost to Chuck's generation, which, until recently, was taken for granted. Yet it will be by following their footsteps that we can best provide our grandchildren with the freedoms we so enjoy. This painting combines elements from both John's "Facing the Storms" and Grady series. In speaking about the inspiration for this work, John said "If we all face the storm together, we're going to make it."

John Weiss 'Fireside Friends'
John Weiss 'Fireside Friends'
The dining room in a colonial bed & breakfast provided the inspiration for this latest work by John Weiss. "When you walk into a room and the fire is lit," he says, "it's the first thing you notice. My next thought goes to who should be enjoying this fire."
"The challenge of this painting was placing a pair of black Labrador retrievers in such a dark area. The goal was to capture the glow of the fire, so, it was necessary for everything else in the composition to be rather muted. When you look into the shadows, you discover clues about your surroundings. The softness of the light enhances the coziness and character of the historic structure. I wanted to capture how walking into this room was like walking into a novel, an escape into another world."

The Black Labrador is a handsome, faithful breed and one I've painted before, but never this young. These puppies are so full of life and fun-it's hard to call them 'trouble' for very long!"

John's first print with Greenwich in 1982 was a pair of Black Lab puppies in an edition of 1000. Our bet is that every one of his latest pups finds a new home, too.

John Weiss 'Cold Nose Warm Heart'
Nothing warms the heart like watching a dog romp in the snow. This image continues John's informal series of prints (most sold out at the publisher) that celebrate the special bond between dogs and people. John's models for these portraits have been his own dogs in the familiar company of friends and neighbors. The model for Cold Nose, Warm Heart is Maggie, the artist's golden Lab, whom you may remember from the popular release New Friends. Maggie is definitely bonding with someone here-someone who's missing a red scarf!

John Weiss 'Finish A Champion'
John Weiss 'Finish A Champion'
In the dog show circuit, to "finish a champion" is to reach the pinnacle of winning, meaning that the dog has earned enough points to be given such a title. The German Shepherd in John's latest painting is such a champ, with an ancient K-9 look of regal bearing and beauty. Originally bred at the start of the 20th century for herding and protection, the shepherd has proven to function in so many ways. From police dog to Rin Tin Tin to cherished best friend, John reminds us that every dog is indeed a champion.

John introduces his new series with the most popular hunting and family member in America-the retriever. The breed's gentleness with kids, eagerness to please and even temperament are just a few traits shared by golden and yellow retrievers that make them favorites. Why do some folks prefer one versus the other? Perhaps it comes down to a lot of hair-and not just on the dog. You either mind having to clean it up or you don't! John Weiss 'Before The Tempest'
John Weiss 'Before The Tempest'
Strength, comfort and encouragement are always within reach is the message behind John Weiss' Facing the Storms series. We may not always be aware of the form in which they present themselves, but the means by which we confront life's challenges are all around us. John, who leads grief support groups when he is not painting, believes that dogs are not the only beings capable of giving so much for seemingly so little in return. He often chooses to represent family, friends and faith in the simple form of man's best friend. With this painting he is saying that we don't have to be in the midst of great turmoil to realize that we are not alone. The key lay in recognizing the wag of a tail for what it is.

John Weiss 'Anticipation'
"Some of my paintings tell stories, some focus on man's best friend and then there are those that capture the emotions of life," says John Weiss. "One of the jobs of an artist is to share with the world the moments which can only be described through their medium. Anticipation is one of those paintings. When the early morning temperatures sink lower than that of the water of Portage Lakes, the fog creates one of nature's most captivating moods. And it is out of this fog that the Black Labrador greets this pair of men in their bass boat."
