Stephen Lyman ' Yosemite Landscape' SmallWorks
Stephen Lyman ' Yosemite Landscape' SmallWorks
"This painting was inspired by the scene at the top of Yosemite Falls on the north rim of Yosemite Valley," wrote artist and explorer Stephen Lyman. "There, one has a panoramic view of Yosemite Point, Mount Clark, Gray Peak, Red Peak, Mount Starr King, Glacier Point, Sentinel Dome and Sentinel Rock." If you look closely at this beautiful Greenwich Workshop SmallWorks™ Limited Edition, you can just make out three figures atop a ridge on the left-the artist, his wife and a close friend.

Stephen Lyman 'Stellar Autumn' Giclee Canvas Masterwork
Stephen Lyman 'Stellar Autumn' Giclee Canvas Masterwork

Artist Stephen Lyman was well known for his epic landscape paintings featuring mountain ranges, broad rivers and valleys, and often the wildlife that make their home in each terrain. Steller Autumn is an intimate portrait of one landscape (a tree) and its inhabitants, Steller's blue jays. In order to capture the intricate details of the scene, Stephen concentrated on one area of a maple tree. The Steller's blue jays are seated contentedly among the glowing maple leaves. As the dark boughs spread upward and outward, the golden leaves and a handful of sky-blue birds remain, imbuing the painting with a sense of closeness and comfort. Artist Stephen Lyman specialized in painting the most elusive moments in nature and no piece better showcases his abilities than Steller Autumn.

Stephen Lyman 'Noisy Neighbor'
Stephen Lyman 'Noisy Neighbor'
Stephen Lyman was an explorer who specialized in painting the most elusive moments in nature.
Through his art, you can travel into a wilderness very few have experienced and share the sensation of being in the true outdoors - discovering, studying and enjoying the all-encompassing beauty of unspoiled wilderness.

In the early morning mist of Noisy Neighbor, a solitary grizzly emerges from the forest, ambling through the bear grass along the lakeside. The glassine water underscores the serenity of the moment. Suddenly the silence is broken by the screech of a Stellar Jay, upset by the appearance of an intruder into his neck of the woods. Knowing it would be fruitless to go after the bird, the powerful bear just stands watching, while the jay, knowing he has plenty of distance from the intruder, boldly continues to chastise him.

Stephen Lyman 'Warmed by the View'
Stephen Lyman 'Warmed by the View'
When we first published Warmed by the View, the most popular question from collectors was "Who would build a campfire that close to a cliff?" Artist Stephen Lyman answered this question quite simply, "I did." An avid adventurer, Lyman lived his paintings and Warmed by the View is no exception. Never one to pick level, comfortable camp sites, Lyman preferred more dramatic, unique locations where he could enjoy 360 degrees of landscape view.
It's difficult to name one signature piece with artists as talented and prolific as Lyman. Certainly his series of campfire paintings qualify, and Warmed by the View is one of the crowning jewels in that series. This cliff edge above Yosemite Falls is a typical camping spot for Lyman. "Fortunately," he would say, "it's hard to go sleepwalking when zipped in a sleeping bag

Stephen Lyman 'Sunrise in the Wallowas'
Stephen Lyman 'Sunrise in the Wallowas'
Far removed from any major metropolis, Oregon's Wallowa Mountains have long been a Lyman family favourite. Originally introduced to the splendour of the Wallowas by his parents, Steve would often take family trips there with his sister Shauna, and brother Scott. Later in his life, Steve introduced his wife Andrea to the area, and she cherishes memories of time spent there together.
"As I camped by this lake years ago, I awoke in the morning to watch the crest of the ridge catch fire with the golden light of sunrise," Stephen said once in describing the inspiration for the painting.

Stephen Lyman 'Storm Over Tenaya Canyon'
Stephen Lyman 'Storm Over Tenaya Canyon'
One of the great gifts of Steve's life was sharing his intimate knowledge of Yosemite, which he literally knew from top to bottom. In Ahwahnee-The Deep Grassy Valley, he guides us through the verdant valley floor. In Dance of Cloud and Cliff, he lifts us up to majestic Half Dome, bathed in setting sunlight. With his classic, monumental landscape Storm Over Tenaya Canyon, we soar higher still. Steve often included wildlife in his pieces and sometimes suggested a narrative, but this pure landscape and the others shown here are deliberate departures almost certainly inspired by the dramatic images of Albert Bierstadt and other 19th-century painters of the west. Stephen Lyman 'In The Heart Of Alaska'
As Andrea Lyman tells us, "Steve loved the Alaskan landscape. He would always return home from camping trips to Denali National Park reinvigorated, impressed and inspired by the area's vastness and beauty. Caribou, he felt, exemplified an animal that could survive only in an area untouched by humans. It's likely no one was within miles of Steve when he was taking the photos this image is based upon, an idea he would have appreciated."

As Andrea Lyman remembers, "Steve loved to glorify the small, easily overlooked beauties of nature. This is a Clark's Nutcracker, a kind of common nuthatch we saw every winter near our home. From far away it's a rather plain-looking bird, but up close Steve saw-and captured-the delicate juxtaposition between light and dark feathers on its wings." A little canvas jewel from Stephen Lyman, replicating the subtle texture of his original.

Stephen Lyman 'Fire Dance'
Stephen Lyman 'Fire Dance'
"The beauty of a campfire is in watching its dance," said Stephen Lyman. "The ethereal qualities are extreme, playing back and forth from the hottest part of the flame to the coolest shadowed crack in the rocks."
Stephen Lyman's passion for the wilderness is beautifully realized in the Masterwork Anniversary Editions of his evocative campfire images. The nearly six foot vertical reach of Fire Dance stretches the drama of this Yosemite mountainside scene to include expanses of both earth and sky. Light suffuses the air and sweeps through the sky on wisps of clouds while the mountain's flanks glow with warmth in this oversized edition.
"The alpenglow, rocks, trees, snow, clouds and dancing flames conspired to inspire me," said Stephen Lyman. "The fire warmed me, it cheered me up and dried me out the experience was beyond words."

Stephen Lyman 'Canadian Autumn' Masterworks Canvas Edition
In the Canadian Rockies, hazy sunlight filters down through the mountains, dancing on wind-driven ripples of water and bathing the trees in its permeating glow. The golden-brown hues of autumn add a rich warmth to the landscape. A bull moose steps lazily around in the lake, feeding on the abundant aquatic vegetation. The scene is rich with sounds, textures and light, one last burst of color and life before the season changes to silent winter. Lyman had said of the painting, "I enjoyed the opportunity to paint diffused light reflected from a pond in the Canadian Rockies, with one of the largest North American animals appearing quite small in relation to the vast landscape."

Not only did this landscape convince Greenwich Workshop founder Dave Usher to finally publish Steve's art, but he also bought the original painting to hang in the company's offices.

Black bear, bright blossoms. Ponderous hulk, delicate flowers. Bear and Blossoms, Stephen Lyman's study of contrasts, plays one against the other as the wildlife subject of the painting takes a back seat to the wildflowers and grasses. "Black bears move silently for being such large animals," noted Lyman.
"In my wilderness journeys I have often been surprised by their silent approach, either by accidental meeting, or by a deliberate visit drawn by the aroma of my supper."This attractively priced Stephen Lyman jewel will find a perfect place in the homes of both the Lyman collector and a new breed of wildlife enthusiasts.

Stephen Lyman 'The Raptor's Watch'
Stephen Lyman 'The Raptor's Watch'
"All of my paintings have their origins in my experience and perception of beauty in the wilderness," said Stephen Lyman. The art of Stephen Lyman allows the viewer to travel deep into the woods, find serenity at the water's edge, climb mountains and be completely at home in the true world-the world of the wilderness. Share the sensation of being outdoors- exploring, discovering, studying and enjoying the all-encompassing beauty of unspoiled nature. The Raptor's Watch is quintessential Lyman.
"Red tailed hawks like to perch on telephone and fence poles and watch for rabbits and mice in the long grasses," Stephen Lyman said of The Raptor's Watch."I wanted to capture this particular hawk on its vigil because of the textures in the scene-in the leaves of the blackberry bush, the moss lichen growing on the fence post and the plowed field in the background."

Stephen Lyman 'Thunderbolt'
Stephen Lyman's vision for Thunderbolt was to allow the viewer to witness lightning's beauty and power closer than anyone would ever dare in real life. In this magnificent image, the tree acts as a lightning rod. As the current travels through the tree's tissue, moisture instantly turns to steam and the result is an impressive explosion. "Lightning is terrifically challenging to paint," Stephen said. "I've seen this phenomenon from a distance while backpacking, but to actually capture it took a lot of research and imagination."

Stephen Lyman 'Last Light Of Winter'
Stephen Lyman 'Last Light Of Winter'
Idaho's Lake Pend Oreille has been admired for centuries, first by the Native Americans who drank from its still, clean water, then by the white men who came to hunt at its shores. "I like wildlife to play an incidental role in most of my landscapes," said Stephen Lyman. "The flying Canada geese, deer and crescent moon may not be evident on the first glance of this spectacular winter sunset. I try to suggest something that underlies the visible landscape, just as the ripples of the waves."

Stephen Lyman 'High Creek Crossing'
The art of Stephen Lyman never fails to whisk us away on an adventure in the great outdoors. With High Creek Crossing, our destination is Yellowstone National Park, and in this awe-inspiring panorama, we are witness to the great American buffalo.
Once known for the millions that roamed the Plains, the bison, or American buffalo, now survives in isolated herds on private reserves and national parks like Yellowstone. During the winter, these animals must forage for food by pawing the ground and sweeping their massive heads through deep snow. In mountainous areas, they will seek the protective cover of trees in an especially strong winter storm. Here, a storm has just passed, and the herd begins to move again in search of new places to feed."

Stephen Lyman 'Embers At Dawn'
Stephen Lyman 'Embers At Dawn'
Stephen was a master of capturing the subtleties of firelight on canvas. Here, in one of his most popular images, we experience the lingering embers of last night's campfire. Created as a companion to A Mountain Campfire, all that is missing from the realism of the scene is the aroma of smoke and the morning's chill. The sun will be coming over the eastern horizon in less than an hour. But, for the moment, there's only a hint of things to come, and the anticipation of a beautiful day in the wilderness.

Stephen Lyman 'Evening Light'
Stephen Lyman 'Evening Light'
Before the darkness falls, a final glimpse of day's light lingers on the nearby mountains. On the windowsill, a candle casts a gentle glow upon a collection of treasures found in field and forest and the reflection of its flames beams from the windowpane. As snow gently begins to fall, Evening Light holds the promise of a peaceful night in the wilderness.
"I don't normally paint interiors," Stephen was quoted in his book Into the Wilderness, "but by doing a still life from inside a cabin, looking out through the window, I was able to get a different take on the wilderness experience. The candlelight serves the same function as a campfire, giving a warm glow to the scene."

Stephen Lyman 'Moonfire'
Stephen Lyman 'Moonfire'
"A campfire is always so attractive, no matter how far away you are from it. In this image, the fire is immediate and hot, while the moon is cool and gentle. The story behind Moonfire is one of balance."
-Stephen Lyman

Setting the scene at one of his favorite lakes high in the Sierra, Steve created an image that skillfully blends concepts of warm and cool, active and passive, bright and subtle, all side by side. The heavenly moon and earthly fire complete the panorama's ode to the concept that balance is an essential aspect of life.

Steve painted a fall scene because it is only at that time of year that you can find such a plethora of subtle colors on the ground. Although this may not be a huge lake, there is an abundance of nature to enjoy. The piece contains all the subjects Steve loved to paint: fire, light, water, reflections, trees and rocks. Taking advantage of his ever-trusty artistic license, Steve was quick to point out that he would never build a fire this close to the water-especially in such a fragile and sensitive ecosystem.

Of all the things to discover and enjoy in Moonfire, take note of Lyman's mastery of reflection, which even encompasses the subtle effect of the evening's breeze. To appreciate the way the campfire, moon and diminutive light are reflected in the lake's rippled surface is to appreciate true artistry. This is an incredibly beautiful and inspiring place to be.

This dramatically formatted print is quintessential Steve Lyman. Through the eyes of an adventurer and artist, he takes us to a place we seldom, if ever, would have the chance to see ourselves. He gives us a most spectacular view at its most vivid and magnetic time of day. He presents us with an environment as a whole, each element (animal, earth, sky and light) only compounding the allure of the last. As an artist, he frames the scene to accent its striking nature.

Stephen Lyman 'Ahwahnee - The Deep Grassy Valley'
Stephen Lyman 'Ahwahnee - The Deep Grassy Valley'
The Yosemite people called Yosemite Valley Awooni or Owwo for (gaping) "mouth," referring to the appearance of the valley's walls from the village of Ahwahnee, the largest and most powerful Indian village in the valley. The natives also called themselves Ah-wah-ne-chee, or "dwellers of Ahwahnee."
Chief Tenaya tried to explain the meaning of "Ahwahnee" to white men by using sign language, but was mistakingly interpreted as saying "deep grassy valley." In his own language Tenaya was trying to sign "gaping mouth." In 1851, the US government tried to drive the natives out of Ahwahnee, but Chief Tenaya never submitted and never signed a treaty.
Naturalist and Sierra Club founder, John Muir, described Yosemite as "a place of rest, a refuge from the roar and dust in which one gains the advantages of solitude. This one noble park is big enough and rich enough for a whole life of study and aesthetic enjoyment, as none can escape its charms of natural beauty." Muir's sentiment is vividly portrayed in artist's Stephen Lyman's masterful Ahwahnee.
