Simon Combes 'Eyes of Warning' MasterWork Greenwich Workshop Fine Art Anniversary Edition Giclée Canvas:
Simon Combes is best known for his paintings of African wildlife, but his deepest passion was the great cats of the world. In 1994 Combes, along with Greenwich Workshop founder Dave Usher, circled the globe to find and paint ten of the worlds most magnificent felines. The jaguar of South America proved to be the most elusive of the collection and the resulting portrait became one of Combesmost celebrated works.
I spent time with Reina, a thirteen-year-old female jaguar, at a 125,000-acre ranch in Venezuela called Hato El Frio where wildlife is protected, wrote Simon Combes in his journal of the trip. Previously, I had been concerned about how to show in my paintings the difference between jaguar and leopard. Having seen Reina, I will never forget. A jaguar is a bigger and more thickset animal, with powerful legs and a heavy head and jaw. Her coat was very short, shiny and a rich russet-gold that made her invisible in dappled sunlight, only ten yards away. The spots are bold and those on the flanks are large rough circles with several black dots insidevery different from a leopards rosettes.

Simon Combes 'First Light'
"Cheetahs are enigmatic and perhaps the most intriguing of all the big cats to me," says artist Simon Combes of the subject of First Light. "My encounters with cheetahs have been like meeting a person who has poise, elegance, class, fleeting moments of warmth and yet tantalizingly aloof. The challenge of painting cheetahs is two-fold: firstly, the chest is so pronounced in comparison to the head that in certain positions the animal can look positively grotesque. Secondly, I am often stumped at portraying the cat's mood what is it thinking behind that mask of haughty distain? So serious, so intent, so reserved, does this animal ever relax and have fun?
This painting was as much an indulgence in design as it was an attempt to capture that magical, early-morning, golden mistiness surrounding the surreal silhouettes of distant arcadia trees. I loved the elegant, s-shaped line from the cheetah's nose to the tip of its tail."

Simon Combes 'Ripples and Reflections'
To own a Fine Art Edition of Simon Combes is to be present in the wilds of his beloved Africa surrounded by animals and an environment alive and in motion. It is a precious moment in a never-ending safari, with Combes as our trusted guide. In Ripples and Reflections, we are observing reticulated giraffes only found in the arid north of Kenya. The Uaso Nyiro River flows through this area until its dwindling waters disappear altogether in the shifting hot sands. As the dry season drops the river level even lower, sand spits divide the shallow flow of water. The newly reticulated landscape mirrors the giraffes' unique coats and protective markings radiating the incomparable sense of being that is Africa.

Simon Combes 'Heavy Drinkers'
It is the epic nature of Africa, its grand expanse, its magnificent wildlife, its overwhelming wildness that draws us to her. Through our Anniversary Edition program we are now able to present Heavy Drinkers, one of artist and adventurer Simon Combes' personal favorites, in epic proportions as well. The painting is set in the vast wilderness of eastern Kenya's Tsavo wilderness, home to great herds of elephants, buffalo and other animals, yet inhospitable to man. Water is scarce so the Voi River's occasional pools, surrounded by lush vegetation, are magnets to a host of animals and birds and the intermittent herd of elephants.
While working painting Simon hosted a steady procession of visitors from nearby villages-most of whom, strange to relate had never seen an elephant before, because they almost never traveled far enough away from their homes to see one. "They suggested many different animals to include with the elephants," he said, "but I resisted, contenting myself (somewhat masochistically) with an audience of 126 egrets, sacred ibis and Egyptian geese." Following in the footsteps of Kilimanjaro Morning, Tension at Dawn and African Oasis (all Sold Out at Publisher), these Museum Edition and Masterwork format fine art canvases bring home the oversized nature of the African Experience.

Simon Combes 'An African Experience'
Artist, adventurer and conservationist Simon Combes called Africa home. His art portrays the grace, power and mystery of the wild with an exacting technique and attention to detail. Best known for his stunning images of African landscapes and wildlife, Combes' paintings would be mistaken for photographs, except for life and warmth no Nikon can capture. In An African Experience, Simon's focus is on the pride of the Serengeti. "Little outcrops of rock stand out like islands in the grassy sea of the Serengeti," Simon said." Formed millions of years ago during the cataclysmic upheavals and volcanic eruptions of Africa's birth, these rock groups form fantastic shapes. For Serengeti lions, rock garden oases are more than watering holes. They provide lairs where cubs can be born, and havens to escape the heat of the day. They are also vantage points from which lions can watch the parade of life go by."

Simon Combes 'The Crossing'
The art of Simon Combes brings the thrilling wildlife adventure of his African home to scores of loyal collectors. This awe-inspiring Anniversary Edition of Combes' The Crossing reveals one of the great wonders of the animal world-the annual wildebeest migration in East Africa.
"Crossing this river is the single most dangerous undertaking in a wildebeest's turbulent year," Combes explains. "In August, when the Serengeti shimmers with heat, the vast herds of wildebeest are desperate to reach the fertile grazing lands of southern Kenya. When the enormous hordes reach the crocodile-infested Mara River, tragedy can strike as some drown in crossing. Nothing can stop the animals in mid-crossing from trampling, jostling and panicking in their efforts to reach the safety of the far bank. This is not always the case, as in The Crossing, which shows its herd making a comparatively smooth passage.
"I attempted to create a contrast between the struggling, tension-packed chaos of the left bank and the peaceful greenness of new pastures on the right. The inclusion of a stark dead tree, vultures, marabou storks, swirling dust and the ominous interest of two hungry lions hopefully emphasized the frantic atmosphere of the thousands still waiting to cross while in the background, a pride of lions keeps watch."

Simon Combes 'Wildebeest Migration'
One of our missions here at The Greenwich Workshop is to share our awe of this world with you. In over 50 releases since 1980, Simon has brought to us the marvel and wonder that is The African Experience; we have circumnavigated the planet with him in search of The Great Cats and gone on safari across North America. There is something magic to having been raised in the mix of wildlife, wilderness and man that is Kenya. I believe it has added a genuineness to his canvases that few artists can touch.
"Wildebeest Migration" is this month's 30th Anniversary Publisher's Choice because it is such a wonderful example of this. The migration of the wildebeest is only the most obvious aspect of the complex ecosystem that is the Serengetti Plains. Hunters at the top of the food chain such as these lions are as in tune the arrival of the massive herds as are the grasses upon which these ungulates feed. Simon's innate sense of how all of this comes together results in a grand depiction of the intimate balance of life.

Simon Combes 'The Biggest Leopard'
"Driving along a bush trail early one morning just a few miles from my home in Kenya, I heard a terrific roaring and screaming," Simon says. "Less than 100 yards away a huge commotion was taking place-two leopards were engaged in serious combat with dust, fur and chunks of dirt flying everywhere. After a few seconds, they broke off the fight to snarl and growl at each other, their ears flattened and tails lashing. Minutes later, the vanquished rose cautiously to his feet and slowly left the scene of battle. The victor was huge-by far the largest leopard I have ever seen. I have tried to capture that moment and expression when he paused to give me a baleful, malevolent glare."

Simon Combes 'Tension at Dawn'
The struggle for survival is as old as Africa itself, and artist Simon Combes observes this daily from his home in Kenya. "Early morning is no time to relax since hunters are hungry and lionesses still seek their breakfast," Simon says. "These big cats concentrate every muscle and highly-tuned sense as their bodies glide through the long grass that covers their approach. The tension is palpable."

Simon Combes 'Staying Close
"Early one morning in the Nakuru National Park near our home in Kenya, I spotted this female Rothschilde's giraffe with her calf looking very alert and concerned," said Simon. "The backlit animals were frozen in tension, which was a sure sign that a predator was nearby. Nothing was visible through my binoculars, but the unmistakable sound of a lion's roar came echoing from the forest. The big cat may have been out of sight, but the deep resonance of its roar was sufficient to make the young giraffe stay very close to its mother."

Simon Combes 'Kilimanjaro Morning'
Rising over 19,000 feet above the acacia studded plains of East Africa, the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest point on the African continent. Often shrouded in mist, Kilimanjaro is a symbol of Africa itself, dramatically dwarfing its surroundings - including the stately elephant, largest of all land animals. Like the first explorers, Simon Combes fell under the spell of Kilimanjaro's majesty, which appears in several of his paintings. Kilimanjaro Morning conveys the essence of Africa's mood and environment. It's a land of legends and mystery, a land of exotic beauty and vibrant color. Kilimanjaro Morning is a portrait of Africa in all its complexity: beautiful, mysterious, impenetrable. "I have sensations of déjà vu," he said, "especially when I am alone on the sweeping plains or down in Olduvai Gorge where early man once lived. It's as if this is not my first experience of Africa; that I have known these places somewhere in the past. It's like coming home."

Simon Combes 'Forest Waterhole'
For his Safari USA 2002, Simon traveled across the country working on this breathtaking canvas. His subject is a waterhole in the Aberdare Mountains Conservation Area, near his home in Kenya. Covering nearly 500 square miles, with an elevation up to 14,000 feet, the Aberdares are the largest mountain range in Africa, and are home to many rare species of animals and birds. One in three Kenyan's livelihood is dependent upon the rainfall, rivers, forest and wildlife of the Aberdares.
"This waterhole in the painting actually exists," Simon says. "It is unusual to see so many different species of animal visiting a waterhole at the same time, but during my research there, I found tracks in the mud of all of them." In an effort to protect these animals from extinction, organizations (including Rhino Ark) have been founded to build a fence to protect these species.

Simon Combes 'Family Ties'
Family is not a concept exclusive to human-beings. Elephant society is extraordinarily close-knit as well. A calf will stay with its mother until near maturity and will actively assist in the upbringing of other offspring within the herd. This scene is set in Kenya's Samburu Game Reserve, where a small calf, not yet a year old, snuggles up to its aunt while the calf's mother looks on with a benevolent eye. One of the better groups of humans working to help young orphaned elephants can use your assistance; Simon has lended them his support for years, and you can check them out at www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org

Simon Combes 'Aftermath'
"Three years ago, visiting Nakuru National Park near my home in Kenya," recalls Simon Combes. "I found a lion and lioness were having a passionate affair, when, suddenly, there was a mighty roar from an impatient call of a suitor-in-waiting only yards away. The result was Afterglow (a Greenwich Workshop release last year). Returning to the park earlier this year, I found the same pride with the big black-maned lion and his harem. The lioness from Afterglow was patiently enduring the boisterous attentions of two cubs. Again, a compelling subject to paint and an even more compelling title: Aftermath."

Simon Combes 'Afterglow'
Aconsumate storyteller, Combes shared this story, "Driving along a dusty track in Nakuru National Park at 7 o'clock one morning, out of the corner of my eye I caught a slight movement in the grass, a shape which broke the pattern of undergrowth some ten yards in. I pulled to a halt and we waited, trying not to be typical tourists, hoping the lions would accept and ignore our presence. After about 15 minutes, we were rewarded when the lioness rose and rubbed her face against the male's side, then crouched back down in front of him, glancing invitingly over her shoulder and lashing her tail from side to side. He obliged, and with the accompaniment of ferocious growls, the act was over seconds later. The lioness rolled onto her back in an apparent display of satisfaction, the big male flopped down in the grass, his face resuming the look of extreme boredom."

Simon Combes 'African Oasis'
"This is Tarangire, a national park in Tanzania and one of my most favorite places in East Africa," Simon says. "It is midday under a cloudless, scorching sky. At an isolated waterhole under the shade of beautiful Acacia Tortilis trees, many different species of animals come to drink. All the creatures of the wild trudge daily through the hot, dusty, gray bush past giant baobab trees to quench their thirst at this oasis."

"Painting the bears of Alaska offered me a new challenge-if I could get there," says Simon. "Finally, my name was pulled in a lottery which allowed me to visit the McNeil River sanctuary to observe bears fishing on sockeye salmon. I spent five incredible days there and probably saw seventy different brown bears. They were all around us; some as close as five feet. Absolute Alaska is a sort of composite image of my observations at both the McNeil and the smaller Mikvik rivers in the sanctuary."
