Scott Gustafson 'Birds of a Feather, Flock Together' SmallWork
Scott Gustafson 'Birds of a Feather, Flock Together' SmallWork
"At some point in life," says Scott Gustafson, "we have all felt like the one who doesn't fit in…the oddball, the ugly duckling. This painting is a visual explanation of that feeling, for when 'birds of a feather flock together,' there is always someone left out. What this little fellow may not know now, but will eventually learn, is that the swans have a club all of their own."

Scott Gustafson 'Merlin and Arthur'
Scott Gustafson 'Merlin and Arthur'
Artist Scott Gustafson's exquisite and detailed paintings speak to the childhood dreams and passions in each of us, unlocking a world of wonder and "once upon-a-times" In Merlin and Arthur, Gustafson brings to life the stuff of which legends are made. Authors and artists have fallen under the spell of possibilities that abound within the framework of the Arthurian Legend. Merlin, the world's foremost wizard, alchemist, prophet and sage would have made a dazzling tutor for Arthur, the young boy who was destined to become Britain's "once and ever king." Gustafson sets his scene in Merlin's room, chock full of exotic and marvelous portents, omens, objects and animals. In fact, 21 symbols and references associated with the legend of Merlin can be found through out the painting.

Scott Gustafson 'St. Nicolas In His Study W/Figurines'
Scott Gustafson 'St. Nicolas In His Study W/Figurines'
Because he's considered the patron saint of New York. This is just one of 50 visual references to the life and legends of jolly ole' Saint Nick that Gustafson has magically designed into his meticulously researched painting. It took him 12 weeks to paint this magical work of art that follows St. Nick's birth in Turkey around 280 A.D. to the present day.
Scott's painting of St. Nick checking his famous list among the clutter of centuries is worthy of a new tradition. Imagine-it's time to gather 'round to decorate the tree. It's also time to hang St. Nicholas in his Study and share favorite stories about the man in the red suit we've come to know as Santa. Published from the artist's original oil painting

Scott Gustafson 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarves'
Scott Gustafson 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarves'
Rather than reference the many popular culture versions of this story, artist Scott Gustafson went back to the original story - a folk tale from the collection of the brothers Grimm - to create this spectacular painting of Snow White in the home of the seven dwarfs.
"When I reread the original fairy tale, it was like meeting old friends," Gustafson says. "I felt a temptation to put the dwarves in elaborate, individual costumes, but I resisted it, because in the story they don't have distinguishing names and characteristics. Since their daily work was mining, their house has elements of metal including the heavy plates and utensils - plus, the alchemic symbols for copper and tin worked across the upper beam in the background. You can practically hear the delightful sounds of music and nature as Snow White and the seven dwarves celebrate the simple pleasures of preparing supper together."

Scott Gustafson 'The Pirate and the Mermaid'
Scott Gustafson 'The Pirate and the Mermaid'
"Of all mythical creatures, mermaids are perhaps the most alluring and mysterious," Scott says. "They embody feminine beauty while remaining elusive and unobtainable. They appeal to both women and men, much like the pirate. The pirate has become a potent symbol in recent mythology (say, the last few hundred years). One need only see the skull and crossbones to unlock a treasure chest of images filled with daring and adventure. This painting is a glimpse into the lives of a couple poised between two worlds, something we less mythological beings are familiar with, too."

Scott Gustafson 'Pegasus and the Muses'
Scott Gustafson 'Pegasus and the Muses'
Scott Gustafson's art is filled with characters, myths and fables many of us met in our childhoods. Pegasus and the Muses is an enchanting interpretation of a Greek legend. Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, was the first to discover the winged stallion Pegasus, who was the son of Medusa and Poseidon. Athena tamed the horse, and gave him to the Muses of Mt. Helicon as a gift.
In his excitement at meeting the Muses, Pegasus struck the side of the mountain with his hooves, which caused water to well up and form a spring that would become known as the Hippocrene. Springs were sacred sources of inspiration for those who sought help from the Muses. If they were truly fortunate, perhaps they would also be allowed to soar through the clouds on the Muses' beloved pet, Pegasus.
As the flying horse of the Muses, Pegasus is a symbol of high-flying poetic imagination. Following in Gustafson's tradition of The Maiden and the Unicorn and The Pirate and the Mermaid, the artist's Pegasus and the Muses will undoubtedly inspire flights of fancy for collectors young and old.

Scott Gustafson 'Happilier Ever After'
Scott Gustafson 'Happilier Ever After'
No other image seemed to evoke the larger-than-life quality of fairy tales than that of the friendly giant carrying children through an enchanted landscape. Only a character of gargantuan proportions could offer the unsurpassed view and fantastic vistas visible from his shoulders, not to mention the keys to unlock the magic of the stories around them," says Scott Gustafson.
In a way, Scott's newest painting is like a visit with old friends - characters from Gustafson's earlier fairy tale paintings - Snow White, Cinderella and Puss in Boots are just a few of the familiar faces found there (as well as some new ones).
As a special Christmas gift this year, The Greenwich Workshop and Hallmark present a special preview edition, Classic Fairy Tales. Comprised of select stories from the larger work (Goldilocks, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumplestiltskin, The Three Little Pigs & Tom Thumb) this is a must for Gustafson fans that just can't wait for next year!

Scott Gustafson 'Daniel in the Lion´s Den'
Scott Gustafson 'Daniel in the Lion´s Den'
Like children's stories, Bible stories teach us lessons about life. "I grew up in a small town and attended a Lutheran grade school where I was taught many Bible stories at a very early age," says artist Scott Gustafson. "I think of my approach to my artwork as a form of storytelling; and although most of my work to date has been illustrating fairy tales, nursery rhymes and other forms of literature, it all really comes down to telling a story in pictures.
The story of Daniel is about a man who is punished for his beliefs by a king who was swayed by vanity and bad advice. But Daniel is also the story of true faith in the face of death and of a man who had the strength of his convictions. I chose to depict Daniel standing in a pool of mysterious light. Behind and around him, lions lurk in the shadows-nearly brushing his robes as they pace to and fro.Yet, these ravenous beasts dare not lay a single paw on the seemingly vulnerable figure who stands in their midst. In these turbulent times, the story of Daniel seems very appropriate. For although his faith is the reason he was thrown to the lions, it was also Daniel's faith that ultimately saved him."
