God sat down for a moment when the dog was finished in order to watch it, and knew that it was good, that nothing was lacking, that it could not have been made better. - Rainer Maria Rilke

John Weiss "A Big Fish Story"
LIMITED EDITION CANVAS
A recurring theme in his paintings, says artist John Weiss, is that "strength, comfort and encouragement are always within reach." Nowhere is this more evident than in his newest painting, A Big Fish Story. Although the woods are dark and the night is cold, the figures in A Big Fish Story are bathed in light and warmth. Seated before a blazing fire, a fisherman recounts tales of his fishing prowess to an awed boy and his captivated beagle. The heat of the fire and the excitement of his grandfather's adventure have brought a flush to the boy's cheeks as he watches the legendary fish grow in size. Their companionship and love create a warmth that floods beyond the walls of the shelter, casting a golden glow on the snowy ground and surrounding woods. The light at the heart of A Big Fish Story draws the viewer in, and we find ourselves leaning closer to hear just how big that fish really was.

John Weiss 'True Companions'
John is known nationally as the foremost portrait artist of the canine species. His intimate observation of the animal has evolved into an insight into our relationships with them and even ourselves. And, in the case of this particular painting, himself. True Companions is an homage to his Labrador retriever, Maggie. Though John does not paint himself into his own work, we are observing a common occurrence in his own backyard. While the two seem to be basking in the warmth and amber glow of the evening's fire, is it possible that something else deflects the night's chill? In the company of his steadfast companion, a moment that could be considered full of loneliness becomes one of magic. Published from the artist's original oil painting

One of the artist's favorite themes, companionship, is beautifully realized in his latest release. By carefully combining colors and composition, Weiss creates an image that perfectly conveys a tender moment in time and evokes our own emotional connection. We see that the dog forms part of this circle of love."People and their pets form an emotional bond that time and adversity can never breach," says Weiss.

John Weiss 'Sharing Lunch'
With his latest release, artist John Weiss continues his tireless exploration of the constant bond between man and his best friend. "The ingredients in this painting are some of my favorite things in the world-the sea, dogs, seagulls and friends," says John. "The gentleman in the painting is an old friend of mine named Joe, who gave me advice that has lasted me throughout my career. If you have a choice between talent and perseverance, talent will only take you so far, but perseverance takes you the whole way."

John Weiss 'One Morning In October'
"I was in a grassy field near my home with this pair of Black Labs," John says. "It was a wonderful morning, just right for a mood painting, as fog hung over the entire field. All was quiet until a noise finally caught the dogs' attention. They perked up and looked away, and in the process provided me with just the right pose. Each breed has that certain stance which suits it best. Labs should be attentive-looking, and that sudden distraction provided me with the perfect expression."

John Weiss 'The Lighthouse Keeper'
"Whether a small mixed terrier in an apartment, or a highly-trained working shepherd, dogs are instinctively protective and bent on being our guardians. I have always wanted to explore this theme in my artwork," says renowned artist John Weiss. "The other inspiration for this painting was one of my favorite escapes, the Marble Head Lighthouse itself. For over 30 years, this spot has been a place of comfort for me.
"On this particular evening I was waiting to study the effect of moonlight on the water. The sun had set and the land was quite dark, but the sky was still full of ambient light, as the stars and moon had yet to appear. I stood looking at this lighthouse that has flashed since 1821, guarding and directing the vessels plying the waters of Lake Erie. My thoughts went to Benejah Wolcott, the original lighthouse keeper, and what it must have been like on those lonely nights standing watch, guarding the guardian of the lakes.
"But today, who better to stand watch at the lighthouse than our loving protectors? Keeping his post ever vigilant, ever loyal, could there ever be a better lighthouse keeper than a dog?"

John Weiss 'The Greatest Generation'
New storms bring back memories of old ones. Country, duty, and a life free from fear came at a cost to Chuck's generation, which, until recently, was taken for granted. Yet it will be by following their footsteps that we can best provide our grandchildren with the freedoms we so enjoy. This painting combines elements from both John's "Facing the Storms" and Grady series. In speaking about the inspiration for this work, John said "If we all face the storm together, we're going to make it."

John Weiss 'Fireside Friends'
The dining room in a colonial bed & breakfast provided the inspiration for this latest work by John Weiss. "When you walk into a room and the fire is lit," he says, "it's the first thing you notice. My next thought goes to who should be enjoying this fire."
"The challenge of this painting was placing a pair of black Labrador retrievers in such a dark area. The goal was to capture the glow of the fire, so, it was necessary for everything else in the composition to be rather muted. When you look into the shadows, you discover clues about your surroundings. The softness of the light enhances the coziness and character of the historic structure. I wanted to capture how walking into this room was like walking into a novel, an escape into another world."

John Weiss 'Our Favorite Place'
Every home has it, a warm, congenial spot that beckons as evening falls. John found this perfect interior setting in a restored 19th-century farmhouse nestled among the rolling hills of Ohio. The hat and jacket, he says, belong to Grady, his elderly neighbor featured in an informal series of portraits; two of which, Old Friends and Forever Friends can be seen below have sold out at publisher. "You'll notice though," John says, "that Grady's cane isn't here; perhaps he's off preparing the evening meal for the two." Published from the artist's original oil painting.

John Weiss 'Old Friends'
A 30th Anniversary Canvas Release
"That's my old Black Lab Brant with my neighbor Grady," says John. "At the time I painted this memory piece, Grady was a very wise old gentleman of 91 and Brant was 12. My wish was to capture these dear old friends as a tribute. Winter seemed the perfect atmosphere, as both were in the winters of their lives. This serves as a nice reminder that even though life can be rough on anybody, an old friend will always see you through."

John Weiss 'Making Memories'
"One of the real thrills of my year was the chance to take my dad fishing," John said when asked about the inspiration for his latest piece. "My father and I went down to Portage Lakes at Dusty's Marina, where I keep my boat, and I got him an old-fashioning fishing cane pole. We hadn't been fishing in years, and the sight of him fishing on the dock was an inspiration. We are so blessed to spend time with loved ones, and it was a real joy to spend this time with him. For the record, he caught more fish than I did."

John Weiss 'Goldens At The Shore'
First bred as sporting dogs in the early 1800s, Golden Retrievers soon became favorites as pets and show dogs. Their friendly, obedient and loving disposition makes them easy to train. Their excellent noses make them reliable hunting dogs, capable of "winding" game from up to 50 yards away.
"The character and rugged beauty of Golden Retrievers is what led me to paint them," says John Weiss. "Since retrievers and water are a natural pair, what could be better than Golden Retrievers on a foggy shoreline?"

John Weiss 'Best Loved Breeds: Golden Retriever'
John introduces his new series with the most popular hunting and family member in America-the retriever. The breed's gentleness with kids, eagerness to please and even temperament are just a few traits shared by golden and yellow retrievers that make them favorites. Why do some folks prefer one versus the other? Perhaps it comes down to a lot of hair-and not just on the dog. You either mind having to clean it up or you don't! John Weiss 'Before The Tempest'
Strength, comfort and encouragement are always within reach is the message behind John Weiss' Facing the Storms series. We may not always be aware of the form in which they present themselves, but the means by which we confront life's challenges are all around us. John, who leads grief support groups when he is not painting, believes that dogs are not the only beings capable of giving so much for seemingly so little in return. He often chooses to represent family, friends and faith in the simple form of man's best friend. With this painting he is saying that we don't have to be in the midst of great turmoil to realize that we are not alone. The key lay in recognizing the wag of a tail for what it is.
