James C Christensen 'All That She Had'
The parable of the Widows Mite illustrates piety in its purest form. A widow, here depicted as a young woman in tattered finery, the last vestiges of her privileged former life, offers all that she has to the temple. Her contribution of two small coins may seem small when compared to the lavish donations of the city fathers, but, said Jesus, this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: for all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even her living. (Mark 12: 43-44)
The square halo formed by the window behind the young widow hearkens back to 11th-century Christian iconography. At that time, living saints and holy persons were depicted with a square nimbus, or halo, in order to differentiate them from the immortals.

James C Christensen 'False Magic' Small Work
In the fantastic world of James C. Christensen's paintings, fish are a symbol of magic and wisdom. "Their floating presence in the air reminds us that anything is possible," says Christensen, "and those touched or surrounded by fish are considered truly blessed. When the fish don't arrive, however, sometimes a person will take matters into his own hands, with compelling but less-than-convincing results. Non-magical fish, as you can see, don't really enjoy hanging in mid-air."

James Christensen 'Faith, Hope And Charity'
Inspired by a recent mural project, James Christensen set out on an awfully big adventure. Wanting to do something grand and romantic while exploring the texture, surface and richness of paint, James chose for his subject three of Paul's greatest virtues - in the form of three women. "This piece is a little bit of a departure," Jim says. "But these gifts of the spirit are important qualities for us to remind each other about." The words in gold leaf identify the three as their names appear in the original Greek Biblical text.
"And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three;
but the greatest of these is charity." - Corinthians 13:13

James Christensen 'The Royal Processional'
Make a royal statement.
You are witness to something few humans ever see. The sweet smell of incense carried on the breeze has awoken you from your rest in the woods and you capture a glimpse of the king and queen of the faeries passing by. "This is not the May Day parade or a Coronation," James C. Christensen explains. "Simply, this is The Royal Processional - just your regular, everyday king and queen of the Faeries entourage."
Inspired by the grand processions of history, fiction and movies, Christensen provides a glimpse of the faerie world by fashioning an eclectic parade of fantasy forest denizens. "The king in the armor is Oberon and the queen is Tatiana," says Christensen. "They are the rulers of the Faeries. Other fascinating creatures waiting to be discovered are their laughing faeries-in-waiting, their old prime minister with the butterfly banner, the young wizard-in-training with his nose in a book, and the incense bearers to alert - by smell - the other forest creatures."

James Christensen 'Visitation/Preoccupation'
How often do we find ourselves too preoccupied within our own little worlds to realize when something truly momentous is happening outside of them? Are we paying enough attention to those around us to really hear what they are saying? Jim Christensen created this series "Winged Words" to poke fun at people (using barbed wire) and get them to realize, "Yeah, I do that, too."
In this extreme example, a very self-important individual, in all his pomp and finery, fails to realize the heavenly nature of his visitor because he's just not listening. In Latin, the angel says, "I am dead." The man's response to his rather uncommon occurrence, "How do you like my clothes?" underscores how little he is paying attention. The pear in the man's hand, one bite taken-bordering on the over-ripe, is a reminder that we may not have all the time we think we do to amend these failures in communication.

James Christensen 'Twilight'
"This painting is a love story," says James Christensen. "Love on many different levels, but most importantly, the power of that which is everlasting. It is rich in symbols that suggest the close of a chapter; the twilight hour of day, the final phase of the moon, the turning leaves on an autumn tree and the checkerboard road that comes to an end. Even though this couple needs help in just getting around, they seem unconcerned. Despite the limitations of old age, they are supported by loved ones, surrounded by a lifetime of favorite things and they have each other. The carnation he offers her is a symbol of enduring love."

James Christensen 'We Three Kings'
"We have seen his star in the east" - Matthew 2:2
The sudden appearance of a new and brilliant star set the kings of the East on one of the Bible's better-known journeys. Through the centuries, paintings have shown as many as eight kings. Some debate whether the magi were actual kings or a group of scholars, astronomers and priests. The Western tradition of three kings most likely arose from the three gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh that they brought to "the newborn King." James C. Christensen provides us with a gift to treasure the whole year through. In his original painting, the star and the three gifts of the kings are gold leaf. For both the print and canvas editions, we were able to recreate this radiant effect, in fact, the canvas is hand-crafted with 22-karat gold leaf.
Each new Christensen offering this year has sold out at the Publisher, and we're certain this will follow. So be sure to contact your local dealer before this gift disappears.

James Christensen 'The Gift for Mrs. Claus'
Twenty "Twas the Night Before Christmases" ago, we were pleased to bring you our first Greenwich Workshop Fine Art Limited Edition from a promising young artist named James C. Christensen: The Gift for Mrs. Claus. This holiday season, we commemorate this milestone with a striking Fine Art Anniversary Edition. "One of my favorite traditions of Christmas is making a gift for my wife," says Christensen. "Whether it is a drawing of one of our children, a fantasy painting, or a stained glass fish to hang in the kitchen window, I know that it will have special meaning for her because I have taken the time to make it.The anticipation of that moment of surprise is as much a part of the joy and excitement as the expression on her face when she actually opens her present. In The Gift for Mrs. Claus, I tried to capture the sense of delightful conspiracy as Father Christmas puts aside a little extra time to prepare a special surprise for his wife."

James Christensen 'St. Nicholas of Myra'
Nicholas flourished in the 4th century as Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor and is universally recognized as the model for our modern day Santa Claus. He is a figure about which there are more legends than facts. Patron saint of sailors, one legend tells of him appearing to storm-tossed mariners who invoked his aid and were brought safely to port. In the Low Countries of Europe, stories of his generosity were legendary and gave rise to the custom of exchanging gifts in his name.
St. Nicholas of Myra is from the world of Saints and Angels, James Christensen's exploration and creation of an alter-ego, an obscure Flemish painter known only as The Master of the Enoch Altarpiece. Previous releases from this collection, Isabella and The Enoch Altarpiece, are both Sold Out at Publisher.

James Christensen 'If Pigs Could Fly'
There are oodles of adages associated with "when pig fly": events extremely unlikely to occur or just plain nonsensical. In the world of artist James C. Christensen, a flying pig might seem perfectly commonplace. But the hunchback holding a candle in If Pigs Could Fly is oblivious to his winged counterpart. In Christensen's art, the hunchback represents the imperfect "everyman" and the candle he carries signifies his wisdom and faith (or the faith in his wisdom, as the case may be). Our hero forges onward, walking ahead, not expecting the unexpected, nor noticing what's happening just over his shoulder. If Pigs Could Fly reminds us that anything and everything is possible, and not to eliminate any possibility.

James Christensen 'The Rich Young Ruler' Limited Edition Canvas
How much are you willing to sacrifice to follow what you believe? That is the dilemma James C. Christensen presents in The Rich Young Ruler. Christensens most popular scriptural works have focused on the challenge to live our faith, to give all that we have and to live in a state of thankfulness.
Just before his triumphal entrance into Jerusalem, Jesus passed through a town where a righteous young man asked him what he could do to inherit eternal life. The young man told Jesus how he followed the Commandments and obeyed the laws of his people, but Jesus asked something more: Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, he said, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. The home of The Rich Young Ruler is filled with symbols of both his success and his dilemma. The laden camels in the frieze in the foreground illustrate Jesus next words to his disciples, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. The ruler himself is richly dressed in fine fabrics and jewels and the room is filled with lush plants, which in a desert setting would be quite costly to maintain. Sputtering beside the entrance to the door is the rulers lamp that, like the flame of his belief, wavers in the wind. These symbols, combined with Christensens unique style, make The Rich Young Ruler an elegant story of difficult decisions and of a Master who will always look back and offer another chance.
The original painting was commissioned by a successful businessman, todays equivalent of a rich young ruler, says Christensen. He wanted a visual reminder that success has many forms and that faith is its own reward. He wanted to ask himself every day what he would have done in that situation.

James Christensen 'Hold to the Rod'
Hold to the rod, the iron rod;
Tis strong, and bright, and true.
The iron rod is the word of God;
Twill safely guide us through.
¯ Joseph L. Townsend, The Iron Rod, LDS Hymns, no. 274
As we walk the road of life, we tend to collect things that make us feel safer and more sure of ourselves. These may be material possessions, titles or responsibilities, but in the end they amount to the same thing: a fleeting and superficial sense of security. It is only by holding fast to our beliefs that we can navigate life with any confidence.
The character in Hold to the Rod finds himself so burdened with the mundane objects he has collected that, while he hopefully eyes the rod, he cannot reach up to hold it for fear of losing something else. The man has become little more than a vehicle for his adornments. He demonstrates that what is truly important is keeping sight of our true belief and faith, that they alone will guide us through.

James Christensen 'Men and Angels'
Man, indeed, describes more than he explains; while the angelic spirit sees and understands. Man judges nature in relation to itself; the angelic spirit judges it in relation to heaven. In short, to the spirits everything speaks. -HONORÉ DE BALZAC
Artist James C. Christensen's portrayals of angels, including Cecelia, Sleeper Lost in Dreams and throughout his Saints and Angels series, inspire us to reflect on the angels among us.The high contrast in Men and Angels reminds the viewer that sometimes our mortal world is dark compared to the world of angels. The image also reveals how a visitor can bring a shining light, leading us out of the darkness.

There are two types of people-those who wait to talk and those who listen. -Anonymous
In the Dolby® surround sound of our daily lives, we all have to find our own mute button. "Since a painting has no soundtrack, the title character at the center of The Listener has found the best way to shut off all the noise in the visual cacophony around him by closing his eyes," Christensen says. "Listening to his still, small, inner-voice, he remains centered without being overcome. We can all find peace in this busy world, but sometimes need to be reminded that we are in charge of our destiny and each of us has the ability to focus without being pushed and pulled as victims."The characters found in the colorful "noise" around the listener in this painting take many forms including politicians, mothers-in-law, musicians, and famous artists can you find Picasso? Master storyteller James C. Christensen's The Bride is a beautifully detailed homage to the traditions and folklore of the wedding day.The stage for this joyous vision in a pastel palate is set in a Christensen fantasy world, as we join a maiden and her unusual wedding party sailing into destiny. Richly layered nuptial symbolism awaits your discovery: something old (the ruins in the background), something new (the egg on the pillow), something borrowed (a tan girl from Baroque artist Diego Velázquez), something blue (the flowing ribbon in the bride's hair, a symbol of purity from ancient Israel). That's only the beginning! Much like the art of marriage itself, Christensen's The Bride promises years of unfolding pleasures.

James Christensen 'The Enoch Altarpiece' - Framed
A Stunning New Framed Canvas Masterpiece Set
For over a year, artist James C. Christensen painted "under the guise" of an obscure, 15th century Flemish painter, best known for, and named after, a multi-paneled masterpiece called The Enoch Altarpiece. Also known as Jehovah Teaches Enoch the Plan of Salvation, what remains of The Enoch Altarpiece are the two sides that once flanked the (missing) center panel. The two angels, who originally were positioned to bless the center scene, incorporate symbols of God's original plan for man's salvation. With the angel on the left are fruit and a serpent, representing the Garden of Eden and the fall of man, while a skull pierced by an Easter Lily appears with the angel on the right, suggesting the triumph of Christ over death and the redemption of man.
The fact that the center panel is missing is rich with allegory as well. According to Christensen the missing center panel depicted not only Enoch and Jehovah, but the City of Enoch as well. Enoch was regarded by God to be so imbued with the Holy Spirit that he was "translated" or "taken from the earth" rather than suffer physical death. "No one is certain what happened to the missing center panel of The Enoch Altarpiece, but the hope is," says Christensen, with a smile, "it will one day return."
The Enoch Altarpiece is a framed, two-piece canvas print set. The artisan who created the frames for the original paintings was commissioned by Greenwich to create two prototypes for this limited edition print set. The elegant resin-molded frames are distressed and hand-brushed with gold to recreate the look of 15th century art treasures.

"I've made up characters, but I've also drawn some of them from art and literature," explains Christensen. "The Lord of the Rings remind us that adults are interested in fantasy, too." And James pays tribute to Ian Ballantine, the publisher who popularized The Lord of the Rings in the United States by releaseing it in paperback. "He is the keybearer on the right. In a sense, he brought me this talisman."

James Christensen 'St. Brendan The Navigator'
St. Brendan's fame rests on the mythical adventure described in Brendan's Voyage, a 10th century romance of Brendan and a company of monks sailing the Atlantic Ocean to the Promised Land. One of the stories of the voyage relates that Brendan, wishing to celebrate Easter Mass, landed on a small island in the middle of the ocean. After celebrating Mass, Brendan and his companions built a fire on which to cook a meal and thus awakened the sleeping whale they had mistakenly identified as a small island. Terrified, the voyagers rushed to their ship and fled. Since then, St. Brendan has been associated with whales and large fish.

This striking portrait is the likeness of Isabella Grimaldi, a patrician of the arts. The character of Isabella was born from the world of Saints and Angels, James Christensen's exploration and creation of an alter-ego, an obscure Flemish painter known only as The Master of the Enoch Altarpiece.
"The Master was able to make a living only through the support of his patrons, and Isabella was one of the foremost patricians of his entire career," explains James. "It was customary at the time for the wealthy to request their portraits take on the literal characteristics of angels. With Isabella, her wings suggested much more to the Master, as she served as a inspiration in his calling. The love of art and encouragement of promising talent is a dance which allows this circle of creation to persevere."

"We are, each of us, angels with only one wing.
And we can only fly embracing each other."
- Luciano De Crescenzo
In dreams, it is said that wings represent a release of creative forces, that they give us the ability to understand and transcend the human condition. In religion, wings appear on angels, fairies, spirits and demons. In mythology, winged creatures are often messengers of the gods; they are a symbol of freedom and spirituality and a character having one wing is said to be lost in dreams. This latest release from James C. Christensen has the power to both provoke and inspire.

James Christensen 'Olde World Santa'
"I wanted to create a painting that would evoke both the history and traditions of the Christmas season," said James C. Christensen. "I was surprised to discover that our Christmas is not just a transplantation of old world traditions, but a synthesis of customs brought to this country by our forefathers."
Our present day Santa Claus is a symbol, not only of Christmas, but represents our melting-pot society. While our Christmas character is the conglomeration of traditions of many people and lands, he has become American in the same way we have. This painting is a fantasy, a personal interpretation of that "jolly old elf" that embodies not only the spirit of Christmas, but the best of America."

James Christensen 'Ten Lepers'
"And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole."
Luke 17:15-19
As he did with The Widow's Mite, James Christensen interprets one of the Bible's more powerful stories and presents us with an image of elegance, grace and beauty. At the same time he engages us in one of the higher promises of art: provoking thought. In fact, the art of reflection is at the core of the painting's message.
The Ten Lepers were a group of men cured of their disease through one of Christ's miracles. Their tattered wrappings suggest what was, until this moment, their illness. Of the ten, nine are too preoccupied celebrating their new lease on life to think of anything else, much yet thank him. The tenth, at this moment, grasps truly what has occurred. He is the only one that returns to acknowledge the Master.
This image provides an inspiring reminder to take a moment from our fast-paced world and reflect on what we have to be thankful for. And, just as importantly, to take the time to show this gratitude.

James Christensen 'Faith Hope And Charity'
Inspired by a recent mural project, James Christensen set out on an awfully big adventure. Wanting to do something grand and romantic while exploring the texture, surface and richness of paint, James chose for his subject three of Paul's greatest virtues - in the form of three women. "This piece is a little bit of a departure," Jim says. "But these gifts of the spirit are important qualities for us to remind each other about." The words in gold leaf identify the three as their names appear in the original Greek Biblical text.

James Christensen 'Garden Rendezvous'
A footfall breaks the silence as the mist drapes aimlessly about ruins that date back to the time of Avalon. The woman in the painting has just heard the sound and turns in its direction. A rendezvous is about to take place
You cannot accuse Jim Christensen of being anything but an incurable romantic. While exploring the grounds of Castle Combe in southern England, Jim found himself taken in by the mood of a foggy day and stunning a rock wall that seethed a storied history. "This piece" Jim says, "is about a sense of place and the flights of fancy a location can evoke if you let it."
Jim lost himself in the painting of the old stones and textures. He spent about a month working on the wall and far less time painting the woman."I felt my job here was to set the scene, to breathe life into a magical location. However, what noise she heard, and the meeting about to take place-that's up to the viewer's imagination."

James Christensen 'Two Men In Conversation Attempting To Put Things Into Perspective'
This piece," James tells us, "was influenced by Gothic painting and manuscript illumination, but the departure point is, of course, a pun on the word 'perspective.' For centuries, old men in villages have sat around tables and philosophized, trying to put life into perspective. Here are two fellows-looming large because they're the main subjects of the image as well as the center of their own conversation-discussing the community around them, the different strata of society being represented by a nobleman, scholar, beggar and so on. Once rumor and innuendo are nicely digested, this duo may chew on larger issues." Giclée canvas. Accompanied by a brass title plate.
