Howard Terpning 'The Horse Doctor and His Medicine Bag at Rendezvous'

MUSEUMEDITION CANVAS
Image size:
66"w x 48"h.
Edition Size:115

Published from the artist's original work

“Once the Plains people had become accustomed to owning horses,” says Howard Terpning, “a special class of medicine men emerged: those with unusual skill in healing the ailments of horses. Some remedies involved the use of various herbs and others would seem to us today like magic tricks, with no sound medical reasoning, and yet they often worked wonders. The Nez Perce were among the best horse breeders, so it would follow that they produced excellent horse doctors.

“This scene at Rendezvous shows a group of Nez Perce and a white trader observing the initial meeting between a horse doctor and his patient. At some point in the healing process, the horse doctor will open his medicine bag and bring out the magical items and herbs that will, with luck, cure the animal.

“This painting enabled me to show a large group of people, surrounded by the clutter and confusion of the annual rendezvous.”

Howard Terpning 'Light Cavalry' SMALLWORK CANVAS
“The Apache were great horsemen,” says artist Howard Terpning. “All the Plains Indians were. This group of tribesmen travels between the mountains with only the clothes on their backs and a minimum of equipment—a far cry from the so-called ‘light cavalry’ of the American army.”

To understand the relationship between the Native American and the horse is no easy feat, but, true to form, Howard Terpning has delivered.

"They followed the warrior's way," writes Don Hedgpeth, author of Spirit of the Plains People: The Art of Howard Terpning. "They were proud prairie horsemen with an appetite for honor and the visceral thrill of danger. They looked death in the face and fought on, emboldened by bravery and the armor of their medicine. They rode for revenge but would fight too for no other reason than to plumb the depth of their courage. There was blood on the prairie where they passed by, and women wailed in the lodges of their enemies."

Howard Terpning 'Offering To Sun'
OCTOBER 07 - LIMITED AVAILABILITY
The spiritual nature of Plains Indians led them to have holy places to which they could go to commune with those spirits that guided their lives or to feel close to what some called the Sure-Enough Father. Native American friends took the artist to such a place on the Blackfeet Reservation south of Browning, Montana. For generations and generations, the Blackfeet had been going into the woods and attaching small offerings to tree trunks and branches. In earlier times these would have been such rarities as eagle feathers or ermine tails or medicine bundles containing items of religious significance. In modern times swatches of cloth are an accepted substitute, respectfully maintaining the custom of ancestors. (We think the dappled woodland setting makes this image distinctive and particularly lovely among Terpning's body of work.)

Howard Terpning 'Medicine Horse Mask'
Howard Terpning 'Medicine Horse Mask'
From Howard Terpning, one of the most important artists in America, comes a stunning new canvas featuring three Crow warriors preparing for an adventure. The head masks (or face masks) worn by horses were usually made for leading warriors and were considered medicine objects that gave power, protection and strength to the horse and its rider. The masks often had beautiful quill work, beads and feathered adornment and their design was sometimes inspired by a vision. Central to Native American medicine is the belief that each human, and every object, has a corresponding presence in the spirit world. These spirits can promote health, wisdom, and even success in battle. Don't pass up this chance to own a Howard Terpning limited edition.

Howard Terpning 'Three Generations'
Howard Terpning 'Three Generations'
An extended family of Crow women is portrayed in Three Generations. Skilled in the many demanding domestic tasks of their culture, these tribeswomen passed their traditions down from one generation to the next, ensuring the future of their tribe and customs. In this family portrait, the distinctive and expressive faces of the grandmother, mother and granddaughter are unique and yet universal. The middle generation carries the weight of responsibility with dignity, the elder, perhaps, now knows joy in understanding the circle of all life, and the adolescent is in that awkward stage we see in many of our own family portraits!

Howard Terpning, one of the most renowned and honored artists of our time, paints the heritage and culture of Native Americans, and in particular, the Plains Indians. Grandfather Speaks and The Teachings of My Grandmother are other recent (sold out) fine art canvas prints that focus on the importance of elders to the family life of the Plains Indian.

Howard Terpning 'They Came From Nowhere'
During the early part of the 19th century, the Blackfoot Nation was the dominant tribe of the North Central Plains. Their territory included some of America's best beaver trapping streams. Trappers discovered by Blackfoot warriors were often killed (and often with guns obtained through beaver and buffalo hide trade with competing French fur traders). This lone trapper will need to draw on all his skills and luck if he is to survive being caught out in the open by this stealthy war party.

Howard Terpning 'Grandfather Prays to Sun'MASTERWORK CANVAS EDITION
“Many years ago, I camped overnight about a hundred feet from this spot,” says Howard Terpning. “As I recall, it is in an area of the Ruby Mountains in Montana, which was part of the vast region that was home to the Blackfoot people.

THIS IS NOW SOLD OUT AT THE PUBLISHER

“Natosi (sun) was the dominant power in their lives and they believed that Sun gave life-giving energy to all things. I imagined that early one morning as Sun’s rays swept across the land, this old man dismounted from his pony. He held up his sacred eagle-wing fan and his pipe and prayed to Sun as his two warrior grandsons looked on with deep respect for their grandfather and the traditions he embodied.

“The story in a painting like this is in the faces of the figures. I wanted to capture a reverence in the faces of these young men for their grandfather and the only way to do that is to make a large enough canvas that your figures can be large. With a large format you can introduce more drama, you can enter more into the play of light and shadow on the figures and you can achieve a more dramatic effect than you would on a smaller canvas.”

Terpning’s passion for the story of the Native American, combined with his formidable talent as a painter, makes each of his Fine Art Limited Editions a unique and commanding treasure for your home or office.

Howard Terpning Nectar of the Gods, MASTERWORK CANVAS EDITION
Howard Terpning Nectar of the Gods, MASTERWORK CANVAS EDITION

SOLD OUT ON RELEASE DAY!!
The Crow Indians (also known as Absaroka or Apsaalooke) historically lived in the Yellowstone River valley. In the middle of the 19th century a Crow man could stop at any stream and drink waters as pristine as they were when they first began to flow thousands of millennia before. Plentiful and pure, the Crow were thankful for its sweet and constant presence.

While his companions remain alert to their surroundings, a man pauses to quench his thirst and rest his horses before continuing across the stream. “People might question the wisdom of a man drinking water from a creek downstream from approaching horses, says Howard Terpning. Perhaps, a war party from a rival tribe is in the area and expedience is the better part of valor. The important thing to remember is that the Nectar of the Gods was abundant and when men were thirsty, they drank.

Howard Terpning 'Vanishing Pony Tracks'
Howard Terpning 'Vanishing Pony Tracks'
“Horse stealing was a sport among the Plains Indians and an important way to gain honor and prestige among other members of their tribe,” says Terpning. “The man in the foreground has his horse stealing medicine attached to his belt with a miniature rope. These four Blackfoot warriors have been following a large band of trappers just waiting for the right moment to capture some of their stock. They no doubt took these ponies in the middle of the night and are now trying to put as much distance as they can between themselves and the trappers who are certainly attempting to track the Blackfoot and take their ponies back. These raiders are using every ruse to elude their pursuers including crossing the river in hopes that their tracks will be lost or at least delay their pursuers.

Howard Terpning 'Chased By The Devil'
Three Apaches race to stay ahead of a dust devil, the desert hot-weather whirlwind full of dust and debris. These ethereal pillars of air and dirt have meandered the baked earth since the oceans first receeded. The white man speaks of thermals and explains them in dry meteorological terms, but the Apache knew better. He knew that the devil was inside the whirlwind, and that if you were caught you would soon die. Howard Terpning created a strong feeling of motion to convey the sense of the Apaches galloping their horses as hard as they could, which is emphasized by this awe--inspiring composition.

Howard Terpning 'The Long Shot'
Howard Terpning 'The Long Shot'
Howard Terpning wishes he never sold the original painting of The Long Shot. Given the body of work he has created, to single out this image is a statement unto itself. The fact that the poster we released in 1983 has never gone out of print attests to the potency of the image. Over the past few years (with a sparkle in his eye) Howard has occasionally said, "You know, The Long Shot would make a beautiful canvas." Perhaps a little slow on the uptake, we've realized just how right Howard is, The Long Shot does make a beautiful fine art canvas. The giclée on canvas process has enabled us to create a fine art reproduction of the original with the size, fidelity and vibrancy we could never attain in a poster. For those to whom the poster of such a fine work of art is not enough, this release is for you. We're quite certain where at least one of these will end up hanging.

"This Crow warrior is sighting down the barrel of a Sharp's 50 caliber buffalo rifle," Terpning says of The Long Shot. "It was a heavy weapon, so in the kneeling position it was necessary to support the barrel with some type of bipod-in this case, crossing two arrows does the trick. The Sharp was very accurate at long range and could bring down buffalo at a distance far beyond that of even the more advanced rifles, so it was a rifle much sought after by the Plains people. This marksman has two friends intently watching to see if his aim is true so they will have meat in their lodges at the end of the day."

Howard Terpning 'Solitude'
Howard Terpning 'Solitude'
Yellows and whites blend with earth tones to set the tranquil tone. The sun's light bathes the landscape and accents its loveliness. A Northern Plains Indian sits quietly on his pony. A second horse on a lead drinks calmly from the stream in which they stand. Even the stream is at peace. Terpning has captured a moment of stillness, perhaps a moment for pondering life's meaning. What is this warrior thinking? Will this be one of only a few quiet moments in his day? "I wanted to capture how much the Native people enjoyed the beauty and serenity of the land," says Terpning. He has done just that.

Howard Terpning 'Blessing From The Medicine Man'
Howard Terpning 'Blessing From The Medicine Man'
Thunderstorms rumble across the Plains indicating winter's end and the onset of spring. The People, as the Blackfoot refer to themselves, use this as the signal to gather for the Thunder Pipe Ceremony, a celebration of spring rains, renewed life and good health. This sacred pipe, according to legend, was a gift to the People from the spirit of Thunder, who the Blackfeet believed was one of the mightiest manifestations of the All Powerful One. This gift was passed down through a succession of keepers. When a date for the opening of a pipe bundle is announced, four drummers are notified and a shaman is appointed. Arrangements are made for the feast and the sacred berry soup. The ceremony is held in two lodges placed face to face. The ceremony, likened to the fertility rites of other ancient peoples, is highly structured and the ritual is split between participants and spectators. The pipe bundle is unwrapped only after a morning of prayers and song. After a great feast, the ceremony continues for those who are authorized to dance with the pipe in order to receive its power. At the ceremony's end, spectators were allowed to come forward and receive individual blessings from the medicine man, bestowed with four sacred streaks of red pigment, placed on the forehead, each cheek and chin. While these markings seem representative of the four directions, the certainty of their meaning lies with the medicine man.

Howard Terpning 'Grandfather Speaks'
"Among all the Plains Indians," Howard Terpning explains, "grandparents were revered by the young children for their wisdom and knowledge. These Blackfoot children listen intently as their grandfather speaks; later, when they have grandchildren of their own, the listeners will be the storytellers, keeping their oral history alive." Howard practically swept the awards at the annual Cowboy Artists of America exhibition in October, 1998. His works took the gold in the categories of Oil, Water Solubles and Drawing and Other Media. Terpning's originals are virtually inaccessible except to a very few, one of many reasons why Grandfather Speaks presents an exceptional collecting opportunity.

Howard Terpning 'Plunder From Sonora'
Howard Terpning 'Plunder From Sonora'
Native tribes did not allow national borders to hinder their movements, although those who lived along those borders learned to use them as a means to gain sanctuary if they happened to be pursued by American, Canadian or Mexican troops. Though the Apaches lived primarily in Arizona and New Mexico, they ranged easily into the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico and considered Sonora and Chihuahua their own province. To them, both Americans and Mexicans were foreign invaders deserving of no quarter, and as a general rule the Apaches offered none. This painting depicts an Apache raiding party on its return from an excursion into Sonora, bringing home about as much loot as they could pack onto their horses.

Howard Terpning 'Running Eagle Falls'
Howard Terpning 'Running Eagle Falls'
Running Eagle Falls, located in Montana's grand East Glacier Park, was originally home to the Blackfeet Indians, who controlled the vast prairies east of the mountains. The falls are unique in that water rushes over the upper fall so dense that the lower fall is completely hidden in the spring, but by late summer the flow decreases and the water seems to change course and flow almost exclusively out of the lower fall. It's this unusual behavior which gave Running Eagle its nickname, the Trick Falls.
By the early 1800s, French, English and Spanish trappers came in search of beaver. As the number of people moving west steadily increased, the Blackfeet, Salish and Kootenai were forced onto reservations. It wasn't until around the turn of the 20th century that people started to look at the land differently. Rather than just seeing the minerals they could mine or land to settle on, they started to recognize the value of its spectacular scenic beauty and rich history.
Since this is the first miniature Terpning canvas released in four years, it will undoubtedly sell out quickly. Don't miss this rare opportunity.

Howard Terpning 'The Force of Nature Humbles All Men'
Fine Art Masterworks Canvas Edition

From the Original Painting in the Permanent Collection of
The Museum of the American West
(Formerly the Autry Museum of Western Heritage)
"This painting is about the truly awesome force of nature and how the sight of such power affects people," Terpning says. "The spring snow melt from a severe winter has created an abundance of water in the rivers and creeks which have in turn created a dramatic, tumbling flood and waterfalls. Two of the men in the painting face the viewer, to suggest that there is far more to see outside the edge of the canvas.
"The setting is not a specific location, but rather a composite of many sites and rivers. I wanted to create a place that native people might have passed through countless times, but in this instance, a group of Blackfoot men have stopped in awe before the roaring power of nature."

Howard Terpning 'The Healing Power Of The Raven Bundle'
Howard Terpning 'The Healing Power Of The Raven Bundle'
The Plains Indians believed that medicine men were empowered by their sacred bundles and could release forces to enhance the healing process," Howard says. "The setting for this painting is a cave I visited on a ranch in Montana. In this scenario, a band of Crow Indians has camped nearby. A woman in the camp has developed a breathing problem, perhaps the early stages of pneumonia.
Using a travois, her husband and a medicine man have brought her to this sacred location where she has been placed in an upright position to ease her breathing. As the scene unfolds,
the medicine man is sprinkling sage and sweet grass on the fire to purify both the bundle and the participants in this ceremony. The husband assists by adjusting the raven bundle so that it is suspended directly over the woman. Such healing ceremonies often lasted for hours and might be repeated on subsequent days if the desired results were not forthcoming. We can only hope that this outcome was favorable."

Howard Terpning 'The Teachings Of My Grandmother'
Howard Terpning 'The Teachings Of My Grandmother'
Among the Blackfoot and Plains tribes, teaching children at an early age was important for the future welfare of the tribe. Girls were taught to prepare food, make clothing and raise a family, while boys were taught to hunt and protect their villages as warriors.
In this scene, a six-year-old Blackfoot girl is intently watching her grandmother starting some beadwork. Grandparents were honored by the young children, and this little girl pays close attention to the way the awl, the sinew and the needle are used to create a beautiful design on the buckskin. The grandmother teaches the girl as her own grandmother once taught her, and tradition is tenderly passed down from one generation to another.
